Roy Campanella Award

The Roy Campanella Award is given annually to the Los Angeles Dodgers player who best exemplifies the spirit and leadership of the late Hall of Fame Brooklyn Dodger catcher. The award is voted on by all Los Angeles Dodgers uniformed personnel, players, and coaches. The award has been given out since 2006 and the past winners appear below in chronological order.

"More than one observer has likened Campanella's quickness behind the plate to that of a cat. He can pounce on bunts placed far out in front of the plate and he gets his throws away with no waste motion. He had not only a rifle arm but an accurate one." - By Tom Meany, NY World Telegram (National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum, Source)

Roy Campanella Award

On August 26, 2011, Matt Kemp - the 2011 receipient of the Roy Campanella Award - became just the second Dodger in franchise history to hit at least 30 home runs while stealing at least 30 bases (30/30 Club), joining Raul Mondesi, who accomplished the feat twice (1997 & 1999).

The Brooklyn Dodgers were making final preparations for their move to Los Angeles when Roy Campanella was involved in a tragic car accident on January 29, 1958, paralyzing him from the neck down, marking the end of his playing career. On May 7, 1959, a Major League record-setting 93,103 fans filled the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum on "Roy Campanella Night" for an exhibition game between the Dodgers and Yankees.

The Los Angeles Dodgers announced the creation of the Roy Campanella Award in September 2006. Did you know that Campanella was featured on a United States postage stamp that same year? The stamp is one of a block of four honoring baseball sluggers, the other three were Hank Greenberg, Mickey Mantle, and Mel Ott.
