Starting Pitcher of the Year Award

The Starting Pitcher of the Year Award is part of the This Year in Baseball Awards, established by Major League Baseball (MLB.com) in 2002 allowing "connected" fans to first select nominees for various awards then vote for those they selected in the categories. From 2002 through 2003 the award was called Pitcher of the Year, but to make additional categories for closing pitchers and setup men the starting label was added in 2004.

Those who were nominated and those who won the Starting Pitcher of the Year are presented below in yearly sections. Bold names denote the winner and all nominees appear in descending order of total percentage of votes received.

"Unless you know another guy who comes back to the majors at age 36 and says, 'If I'd asked myself what kind of year I wanted it to be, my answer wouldn't even be dose to what it's been.' It has been amazing. 'More than amazing,' Chris Hammond says." - Sportswriter David Kindred in The Sporting News (09/30/2002, '1.00 is the loveliest number')
