Johnny Vander Meer No Hitter Box Score on June 15, 1938

Ebbets Field turned on their lights for the first time ever and Johnny Vander Meer turned them ALL back off. However, Vander Meer was not as sharp during this no-hitter and walked eight (8) batters and needed some superb fielding by Lew Riggs on two (2) grounders and a great catch by Wally Berger on a deep fly hit by Pete Coscarart in the third inning. In the ninth inning it looked as if Vander Meer would not make it when he quickly walked two batters. He hung in, got two outs, and walked a third batter to load the bases with Bums. Leo Durocher came to bat and history was made when he hit a short fly to right center that was caught by Harry Craft for the final out.

"After the June fifteenth repeat of the performance against Brooklyn I was still just a novelty, a kid who had done a freakish thing." - Johnny Vander Meer

This was the first and only time in history two (2) consecutive no-hitters were thrown and the first time one (1) pitcher had two (2) hitless shutouts during the same season

Did you know that this Johnny Vander Meer no-hitter was also the first night game ever played at historic Ebbets Field?

Is this National League no-hitter one of the greatest in history? Do you think the feat of pitching two (2) consecutive no-hitters will ever be matched? Discuss these issues with fellow fans of our national pastime in our forums.
