Did you know that during the first inning Sandy Koufax also recorded a fabulous feat when he threw only nine pitches and all nine were strikes?
Two time batting champion Richie Ashburn almost ended it all during the sixth inning when he hit a sharp line drive into left field. The ball was lost in the lights by Tommy Davis who barely recovered and made a spectacular catch preserving the no hitter!
Ninth inning play-by-play: Sandy Koufax walked pinch hitter Gene Woodling. He was replaced by the speedy pinch runner Joe Christopher as Richie Ashburn strided to the plate. With a 1-1 count, Ashburn hammered a ball down the left field line that barely curved foul at the last possible moment. Ashburn then hit a hard liner to Maury Wills who stepped on second for the first out. Rod Kanehl came to the plate next and on a 0-2 count he hit an infield ball to Jim Gilliam who threw to Wills for the second out. Felix Mantilla was the Mets last chance and he swung hard at a high fastball with a 2-1 count. The ball took a hard bounce and forced Wills deep who leaped high and barely caught it. Kanehl was running hard from first and Wills threw accurately to Larry Burright at second for the final out!
