Sam Jones No Hitter Enhanced Box Score

On May 12, 1955, Sam Jones became the first black pitcher from either Major League to throw a no-hit game and it was the first no-hitter thrown hurled at Wrigley Field since Hippo Vaughn's gem in 1917.

"You've never seen a curveball until you've seen Sam Jones's curveball. If you were a righthanded hitter that ball was a good four feet behind you. It took a little courage to stay in there because he was wild and he could throw a fastball very hard. He wasn't very expressive, he wasn't the gregarious type (but) he injected humor." - Hobie Landrith

Traditional Box

On June 30, 1959, Sam Jones pitched a one-hitter versus the Los Angeles Dodgers. The lone hit came on a questionable / much debated fielding bobble by Andre Rodgers. The local scorer who called the Rodgers error a hit was Charlie Parks.

Sam Jones pitched a second no-hitter during his Major League career on September 26, 1959 versus the St. Louis Cardinals, but it was rained out after seven (7) innings and does not get included in the "official" list of no-hitters put forth by Major League Baseball.

Did you know that Sam Jones ended this gem with suspense and style when he loaded the bases with three (3) walks then struck out the side: Dick Groat, Roberto Clemente and Frank Thomas?
