The F.I.U. baseball program started in 1973 and Rusty McNealy was their first player to make it to the Major League level. Former Major League infielder Mike de la Hoz made his Major League debut on July 22, 1960 and attended F.I.U. He earned a Bachelor in Business (2002) & Finance (2002), but not until he left the playing field.
On February 26, 2002, a sold-out crowd of 2,473 at University Park, the largest home crowd ever in the program's twenty-nine year history, saw F.I.U. defeat defending national champion University of Miami, 7-1.
