UCI won its first NCAA Division II baseball championship in 1973, when the Anteaters defeated Ithaca College, 9-6, in the final at Springfield, Illinois. UCI catcher Terry Stupy was named MVP of the national tournament. Also on the all-tournament team were Jeff Malinoff, Jack Cleveland, Rod Spence, Gary Wheelock and Jerry Maras.
