The University of San Diego baseball program started in 1958 and Kerry Dineen was their first player to make it to the Major League level.

On August 25, 1977, John Wathan became the first San Diego Toreros former player to hit a major league home run when he went deep in te third inning off Milwaukee Brewers hurler Sam Hinds.
