Year by Year Leaders for Shutouts

Ever wonder who had the most shutouts the year you were born? How about pitchers from you favorite team — have they ever led the league in shutouts? Baseball Almanac is pleased to present a year-by-year leaderboard in Major League shutouts for every season since 1876. Note: A bold faced entry denotes that the player was active during the previous Major League season.

"What, and give him (the batter) a chance to think on my time." - Shutouts Leader (1911, 1913, 1915-1917, 1919, 1921) / Hall of Famer Grover Alexander

Did you know that Walter Johnson set the Major League record for career shutouts with one-hundred ten? Far too easy? Did you know that he is the only pitcher in Major League history with more than one-hundred?

George Bradley (1876) and Grover Alexander (1916) share the Major League record for most shutouts thrown during a single season with sixteen each.

Ted Lyons led the league in shutouts in 1925 then again in 1940. Can you find a pitcher with league leading seasons further apart or is he the record holder for this unique sign of longevity?
