The game started at 5:45 p.m. which created conditions that Dale Murphy described with, "It was like three different games. The first three innings it was cold, but sunny. The next three you had the shadows and it made it almost impossible to hit. The last three it got darker and you could see a little."

During the fifth inning Dwight Gooden replaced Fernando Valenzuela on the mound and became the youngest player (nineteen) to ever appear in a Midsummer Classic.

Major League Baseball will pay for one guest to attend for each player selected to an All-Star team. Damaso Garcia did not choose a relative, a spouse, or a girlfriend. He selected teammate Alfredo Griffin — his doubleplay partner and friend. In a stroke of fate, Alan Trammell hurt his arm two days before the game and Griffin was able to replace him since he was already in attendance.
