Red Schoendienst, who was the game's "hero" due to an extra-inning home run, sat out for the first ten innings as Jackie Robinson started at second base.

Nine All-Star games had been played in American League ballparks through 1950 and this was the first time where the National League won on an American League field.

The game winning home run was made possible by Ralph Kiner, who smashed a ninth-inning home run off Art Houtteman to tie the contest.
