Joe McCarthy, the New York Yankees' skipper and American League All-Star manager, had been accused of favoring his players and challenged to win without them. During this contest, not one of "his" six Yankees played and he still emerged victorious.

Vince DiMaggio entered the game during the fourth inning and narrowly missed hitting for the cycle! By the ninth inning he had a single, a triple, and a home run - a double shy of becoming the first All-Star cycle hitter.

The 1943 All-Star Game was the first Midsummer Classic played at Shibe Park and the first played at night time.
