Did you know that this was the second All-Star Game where each starting pitcher was a former Cy Young Award winner? The first was during the 1978 Midsummer Classic and it featured Jim Palmer (American League) versus Vida Blue (National League).

Quite a few players, fans, and media sources place the fault for offensive struggles on the late starting time of this game. Ryne Sandberg disagreed, "It wasn't the sun that was a problem for me. It was the pitching. The pitchers have a great advantange in an All-Star Game. You only see them once a year and they come in and throw hard for a couple of innings. It's really a pitcher's game most of time.

This was the twenty-second win for the National League over the course of the last twenty-five games and the eighth extra-inning victory for the senior circuit (who was undefeated in extra-inning All-Star Games).
