1977 All-Star Game Box Score

Baseball Almanac is pleased to present the box score to the 1977 Midsummer Classic which was played on July 19, 1977 at Yankee Stadium in New York, New York.

"Something is wrong with a system that leaves a pitcher like Nolan Ryan (thirteen wins & two-hundred twenty two strikeouts at the All-Star break) off an All-Star team. I would like to see Nolan here because it would add considerable strength to the team, but it's a bad system when you have to pick a player from each team." - Jim Palmer

The quote at the top of the page about Nolan Ryan was the result of American League skipper Billy Martin not selecting him. Martin said of the incident, "He (Nolan Ryan) should be suspended and not receive his salary for a week (for not attending). I think baseball should dictate policy to the players and not let the players dictate policy to baseball."

The strong words by Billy Martin (above) came after Nolan Ryan refused to attend the game. Ryan defended his actions, "I was having a good year and I was planning on going to New York for the (All-Star) game and Yankee Stadium and seeing some old friends, but then I wasn't picked. I made plans to take my family away during the All-Star break. Then, when I was picked as a replacement for (Frank) Tanana, I decided to take my family away anyway. Some people thought I was mad (for not being selected in the first place), but I wasn't. I just made other plans and stuck to my guns. I have no regrets."

Did Billy Martin make the right decision? Should managers have COMPLETE control over what pitchers are allowed to attend the All-Star Game? Share your thoughts on Baseball Fever.
