1954 All-Star Game

The 1954 All-Star Game featured some of the most exciting and evenly paced baseball to date as both divisions went at each other in nine-inning fight to the finish.

The National League was still riding a four game winning streak and the American League was determined to end it. This game also rewrote the books as it tied or set records for home runs by both teams (six), homers by one team (four, American League), runs by both teams (twenty), hits by both teams (thirty-one) and hits by one team (seventeen, American League).

In the eighth inning, the National League was leading 9-8 and on they're way to another victory. Not to be outdone again, the American League scored three runs. Then, Larry Doby sent the Cleveland crowd into a hometown frenzy with a pinch-hit, game-tying home run with one out. Yankees Mickey Mantle and Yogi Berra both followed with base hits. The National League was back on its heels as Gene Conley walked Al Rosen, loading the bases. One out later, the stage was set and Nelson Fox knocked one into short center scoring the final and winning runs. Closer Virgil Trucks, who was pitching in place of Dean Stone, sealed the victory. After walking Duke Snider, he forced a ground out by Stan Musial and retired the last two batters. Finally, the American League had won after four years of defeat.

"The greatest thrill in the world is to end the game with a home run and watch everybody else walk off the field while you're running the bases on air." - Al Rosen

Dean Stone came in during the eighth inning with two outs and Red Schoendienst on third. Schoendienst attempted to steal home and was thrown out by Stone. This third out set the stage for Larry Doby who pinch hit for Stone and tied the game with a home run.

This was only the second Midsummer Classic to date with more than sixty-thousand fans in attendance. The first occurred during the 1935 All-Star Game which was also held at Municipal Stadium.

Check the individual All-Star player record book and the All-Star team record book to see how many records were actually set during this amazing game.
