Autograph Of The Week: John Valentin

On July 8, 1994, John Valentin performed an unassisted triple play - one of the rarest feats in major league baseball. It has been accomplished only a few times in major league history and is a legacy type event that will follow each and every player who has ever accomplished this unbelievable feat.

"Pulling off an unassisted triple play is more about being in the right place at the right time, but none the less, I feel fortunate for having had the good fortune of doing it. It is something which very few people can ever claim. More people have walked on the moon then pulled an unassisted triple play." - John Valentin

John Valentin thought there was already one out when he took part in this spectacular event and after the game he said, "The irony is that I thought there was one out. After I caught the line drive and touched second, I saw the scoreboard over the first base dugout. It had a big 0 next to outs. For good measure, I tagged Kevin Mitchell who was chugging toward me from first. The baseball gods were looking down on me that day."

On July 8, 1994, John Valentin became the second Red Sox player involved in an unassisted triple play. The first was first-baseman George Burns who turned his on September 14, 1923!

Did you know that his glove was stolen after the game? In an interview done later he commented, "My only regret is that the glove was subsequently stolen. I wanted to give it to my dad."
