Autograph Of The Week: Thurman Munson

On August 2, 1979, the team captain for the New York Yankees, Thurman Munson, died in the crash of his private plane. Munson was killed while practicing take-offs and landings at a runway in Canton, Ohio.

"I'm a little too belligerent. I cuss and swear at people. I yell at umpires and maybe I'm a little too tough at home sometimes. I don't sign as many autographs as I should and I haven't always been very good with the writers." - Thurman Munson's Epitaph

Did you know that before the crash occurred Thurman Munson had told his teammate Lou Piniella, "Ah, hell Lou, there's no need to worry."?

Lou Gehrig was the New York Yankees team captain from 1935-1941. Thurman Munson, who was selected as team captain in 1976, was the successor to Gehrig and once commented, "Maybe they made me captain because I've been here so long. If I'm supposed to be captain by example, then I'll be a terrible captain."
