Autograph Of The Week: Chris Hoiles

On August 14, 1998, Baltimore's Chris Hoiles became the ninth major league player and first catcher to hit two grand slams in one game. Hoiles hit a grand slam in the third inning off Cleveland's Charles Nagy and in the eighth against Ron Villone in the Orioles' 15-3 victory.

"It's a bunch of things wrapped into one. I had friends and family here. Just to do two in one game, that in itself is pretty exciting." - Chris Hoiles

Jim Gentile and Frank Robinson are the other Orioles who had hit 2 grand slams in 1 game. Do you remember which other American League players have accomplished the nearly impossible?

Chris Hoiles, who is from Ohio, had more than twenty friends and family members at this particular game which was played at Jacobs Field. The Cleveland fans gave Hoiles a standing ovation and after the game he commented, "I didn't know quite what to make of that. I don't know if they became O's fans for a minute or what!"
