Autograph Of The Week: Kerry Wood

On May 7, 1998, Kerry Wood made his fifth major league start and struck out the side in the first inning. His fastball gained speed as the game went on, his curveball broke at the last second, and his slider was literally untouchable. So why did he receive our Autograph of the Week?

Wood, who was 20-years-old, tied the record set by Boston's Roger Clemens against Seattle on April 29, 1986, and matched by Clemens against Detroit on September 18, 1996. Wood also broke the National League record of nineteen strikeouts in a nine-inning game, held by Steve Carlton, Tom Seaver and David Cone.

"It's the best game I've ever seen pitched. I'm just proud to have been there to watch it." - Chicago Cubs Manager Jim Riggleman

After the game was over Kerry Wood said, "I couldn't imagine ever doing this, to tell you the truth. It's special to strike out that many, regardless of who has done it. It hasn't settled in and I'm still in awe a little bit."

Roger Clemens said of Wood's record-setting day, "I think it's awesome. He's got a really good idea about how to pitch, or he wouldn't be at this level right now, as young as he is."

Did you know that this was Kerry Wood's first complete game in the majors and that he struck out the incredibly powerful Astros 3-4-5 hitters (Jeff Bagwell, Jack Howell, and Moises Alou) in all three of their at-bats?
