Autograph Of The Week: Don Cardwell

On May 15, 1960, the Chicago Cubs defeated the St. Louis Cardinals 4-to-0 at Wrigley Field. The Cubs pitcher, Don Cardwell, held the red-birds hitless for nine innings to become the sixth Cubs' pitcher to throw a no-hit game and their second in the 20th century.

However, what makes this no-hitter remarkable is that Cardwell had just been traded by the Philadelphia Phillies making him the first pitcher to throw a no-hitter in his first start after being traded.

"He (Don Cardwell) was one of the best hitting pitchers in history, or at least that I've seen." - Tom Seaver

The card above has the following note written on the back: "A strong hitter, Don has slugged 15 homers in the NL." - a total he would finish his career with in 1970!

How recent was the trade? Two days prior (May 13, 1960) Don Cardwell was a Philadelphia Phillie's pitcher!

The no-hitter was preserved by a spectacular catch made by rightfielder George Altman during the eighth inning and won by an Ernie Banks home run!
