Autograph Of The Week: Robin Ventura

On September 4, 1995, Robin Ventura hit two grand slams during the same game - an event which had taken place only seven times before.

However, we chose Ventura as our Autograph of the Week because he hit two grand slams on May 20, 1999 - one in each end of a doubleheader. In a day and era when doubleheaders are not as common as yesteryear it is significant to note that this was the first time in either league where a player hit a grand slam in both games of a doubleheader.

"Robin (Ventura) might tell you he's not a home run hitter, but in batting practice, it's nothing for him to hit one over the center field wall. It's all about timing and weight shift and bat-speed. Robin is blessed with all that. Remember, this is a guy who hit in 58 straight games in college. I don't care what league you're talking about, that's still two more than Joe DiMaggio." - Mets Manager Bobby Valentine
