Autograph Of The Week: Randy Johnson

The Seattle Mariners played their first American League game on April 6, 1977 at the Kingdome. Eleven years later a pitcher from the Expos joined the team and Mariners' fans rejoiced.

Randy Johnson is our selection for Autograph of the Week because he threw the first Seattle Mariners no-hitter in franchise history on June 2, 1990. A masterpiece that was also the first thrown in the Kingdome, much to the delight of the Mariners' fans.

"He uses his size to intimidate batters. He also has that scowl. Randy (Johnson) is more confident on the mound now, too. You can tell by his body language. He used to come apart when guys started doing a lot of bench jockeying. Then he'd let the game get away from him. But not anymore." - Assistant General Manager Dan O'Dowd

Did you know that this American League no-hitter was also the first career shutout for Randy Johnson?

Randy Johnson, who walked six batters during this no-hitter (including a bases loaded jam during the sixth inning (review the box score for additional details), went on to lead the American League in bases on balls with one-hundred fifty-two in 1990. He would lead the league in 1991 and 1992 also making him the first pitcher since Nolan Ryan to lead the league in walks three consecutive seasons!

Ninth inning play-by-play: Cecil Fielder faced three pitches and struck out swinging, Chet Lemon fouled out to first baseman Alvin Davis with a 2-2 count, and Mike Heath struck out swinging on an 0-2 fastball!
