Autograph Of The Week: Johnny Bench

On July 15, 1980, Johnny Bench hit another home run and the Big Red Machine rolled to another victory. David Palmer of the Expos served up the pitch and the Reds won 12-7.

The home run hit that historic day was the 314th of Bench's career while playing as a catcher. He had 33 other long balls at other positions, but this one was especially significant because Yogi Berra had held the record for most home runs hit by a catcher with 313!

"Most people don't understand catchers. For example, Jerry Grote is a catcher who hits. Johnny Bench is a hitter who catches. There is a big difference." - Joe Torre (1975)

Who do you believe was the BEST offensive catcher in the history of the game? Johnny Bench, Yogi Berra, Roy Campanella, Mickey Cochrane, Carlton Fisk, or maybe Mike Piazza? Share your opinion on our baseball message boards today!

The back side of the card above has an interesting fast fact, "Became 52nd player in history to reach 1,300 RBI's on June 9, 1982!"

When the record was broken, Yogi Berra sent Johnny Bench a telegram which read, "Congratulations on breaking my record. I always thought the record would stand until it was broken."
