I was updating the record (3) for Putouts in an Inning by Pitchers, basically adding a link to a recent box score where the record was tied, and in the article I was reading, they said it was the first since 2008. Problem was, I did not have an entry from that season.
I searched my box score set, cross confirmed all the entries I had, and no new additions. I reached out to Sean Forman from Baseball Reference, since they do incredible play-by-play work, and he sent me his list. Still, no record tying incident in 2008. Dug a little deeper, determined that the twirler had an unassisted double play in that inning first, success, game confirmed – he had three putouts in an inning!
What happened next? I updated the record book, then mentioned it on the online baseball card for our new record setter, Alfredo Aceves. While there, I added a nice quote about him made by John Farrell, integrated a unique “did you know” fast fact about his Mexican heritage, then put up some uniform number history he made with the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox.
The autographed card Ace signed for us wasn’t in the Baseball Card Database, so that set of 2009 Topps cards was added, then the checklist link was put on his page, as well as Brett Anderson, Brian Duensing, and Rickie Weeks.
