The Courier Post wrote the following (October 10, 1971, Page 39), "Faced with the loss of their team to Texas after 71 years in the major leagues, the last loyal fans of the Washington Senators never got to see the final out. American League baseball in the nation's capital came to an end Thursday night in the turmoil of a forfeited game to the New York Yankees in the ninth inning when several thousand fans streamed out of the stands and onto the field preventing completion of the farewell game that was one putout away from 7-5 victory for the Senators."

Fred Schwed, Jr., in How to Watch a Baseball Game (1957) wrote our favorite baseball box score quote, "The baseball box score is the pithiest form of written communication in America today. It is abbreviated history. It is two or three hours (the box score even gives that item to the minute) of complex activity, virtually inscribed on the head of a pin, yet no knowing reader suffers from eyestrain."
