"It had taken over 11 big league years, but Tom Seaver finally was able to cross off one of the few achievements (a no hitter) that had eluded him in his magnificent career. And at last, the specter of what might have been turned into the sweet fulfillment of finally reeling in the big one." - Office of the Commissioner of Major League Baseball (1978)) |

This was the third no hitter thrown in Riverfront Stadium and an actual ticket stub from the game appears above. The two before were by Ken Holtzman on June 3, 1971 and Rick Wise on June 23, 1971.
A play by play for the ninth inning by Baseball Almanac: The Cardinals sent up Jerry Mumphrey to pinch hit for relief pitcher Buddy Schultz and Mumphrey earned a walk. Lou Brock hit a fly ball to left field which was cleanly fielded by George Foster for the first out. Garry Templeton hit into a force out with a slow bouncer to Dave Concepcion recording the second out. Hard hitting George Hendrick grounded out on a routine play to first baseman Dan Driessen for the third and final out of Tom Seaver's first & only career no hitter.
