Chapter 29: Pitch Sequence Study

While researchers generally require minimum sample sizes of twenty-five subjects, for this study, I had to accept minimum sample sizes of ten subjects. I use asterisks (*) to indicate sample sizes less than ten subjects. When I place asterisks beside batting averages and on base percentages, readers should recognize that I cannot confidently interpret that data cell.

a. Left-Handed Spray Hitters

Table 29.1: Left-Handed Spray Hitter One Pitch At Bats

Fastball Slider Screwball
1 Pitch At Bats .286 .345 .250

When left-handed spray hitters correctly anticipated first pitch fastballs, sliders and screwballs, they batted .286, .345 and .250, respectively. Therefore, I should throw first pitch screwballs.

Table 29.2: Left-Handed Spray Hitter One Pitch Sequence

Fastball Slider Screwball
1 Pitch Select .232 .224 .243

When left-handed spray hitters did not correctly anticipate first pitch fastballs, sliders and screwballs, their at bat resulted in .232, .224 and .243 batting averages, respectively. Therefore, I must throw first pitches to left-handed spray hitters that they do not correctly anticipate.

Table 29.3: Left-Handed Spray Hitter Two Pitch At Bats

FB SL Sc FB SL Sc FB SL Sc
2 Pitch At Bats .200* .133 .400* .333* .143* .125* .357 .333* .381

When, after first pitch fastballs, left-handed spray hitters correctly anticipate second pitch fastballs, sliders and screwballs, they batted .200*, .133 and .400*, respectively. Therefore, after first pitch fastballs (.133), I should throw second pitch sliders.

When, after first pitch sliders, left-handed spray hitters correctly anticipate second pitch fastballs, sliders and screwballs, they batted .333*, .143* and .125*, respectively. Unfortunately, the small sample sizes prevent meaningful interpretation.

When, after first pitch screwballs, left-handed spray hitters correctly anticipate second pitch fastballs, sliders and screwballs, they batted .357, .333* and .381, respectively. While I cannot meaningfully interpret the first pitch slider, second pitch screwball two pitch sequence, I should never throw first pitch screwballs.

Table 29.4: Left-Handed Spray Hitter Two Pitch Sequences

Fastball Slider Screwball
FB SL Sc FB SL Sc FB SL Sc
1st/2nd Pitches .241 .381 .100 .267 .333 .148 .200 .077 .269

When, after first pitch fastballs, left-handed spray hitters do not correctly anticipate second pitch fastballs, sliders and screwballs, their at bat resulted in .241, .381 and .100 batting averages, respectively. Therefore, after first pitch fastballs, I should throw second pitch screwballs. However, the two pitch at bat results indicate that, after first pitch fastballs, I should throw second pitch sliders (.133). To resolve this apparent conflict, I need to examine the (FB:SL) and (FB:Sc) first and second pitch selections in the three pitch sequences.

When, after first pitch sliders, left-handed spray hitters do not correctly anticipate second pitch fastballs, sliders and screwballs, they batted .267, .333 and .148, respectively. Therefore, after first pitch sliders, I should throw second pitch screwballs. The two pitch at bat results concur. To confirm, I need to examine the (SL:Sc) first and second pitch selections in the three pitch sequences.

When, after first pitch screwballs, left-handed spray hitters did not correctly anticipate second pitch fastballs, sliders and screwballs, they batted .200, .077 and .269, respectively. Therefore, after first pitch screwballs, I should throw second pitch sliders. The two pitch at bat results concur. To confirm, I need to examine the (Sc:SL) first and second pitch selections in the three pitch sequences.

When, after (FB:Sc), I threw third pitch fastballs, sliders and screwballs, left-handed spray hitters batted .182, .000* and .000*, respectively. Therefore, I should more frequently throw the (FB:Sc:SL) and the (FB:Sc:Sc) three pitch sequences.

When, after (SL:Sc), I threw third pitch fastballs, sliders and screwballs, left-handed spray hitters batted .188, .000* and .200*, respectively. Therefore, I should more frequently throw the (SL:Sc:SL) and the (SL:Sc:Sc) three pitch sequences.

Therefore, after first pitch fastballs, I should throw second pitch sliders. To confirm, I need to examine the (FB:SL) first and second pitch selections in the three pitch sequences.

When, after first pitch sliders, left-handed pull hitters do not correctly anticipate second pitch fastballs, sliders and screwballs, they batted .250, .200* and .200, respectively. Therefore, after first pitch sliders, I should throw second pitch sliders or screwballs. To determine which first and second pitch selections are better, I need to examine the (SL:SL) and (SL:Sc) first and second pitch selections in the three pitch sequences.

When, after first pitch screwballs, left-handed pull hitters do not correctly anticipate second pitch fastballs, sliders and screwballs, they batted .240, .067 and .097, respectively. Therefore, after first pitch screwballs, I should throw second pitch sliders. To confirm, I need to examine the (Sc:SL) first and second pitch selections in the three pitch sequences.

c. Right-Handed Spray Hitters

Table 29.13: Right-Handed Spray Hitter One Pitch At Bats

Fastball Slider Screwball
1 Pitch At Bats .326 .318 .375

When right-handed spray hitters correctly anticipated first pitch fastballs, sliders and screwballs, they batted .326, .318 and .375, respectively. Therefore, I must develop additional pitches that would be effective against right-handed spray hitters.

Table 29.14: Right-Handed Spray Hitter One Pitch Sequence

Fastball Slider Screwball
1 Pitches .289 .242 .276

When right-handed spray hitters did not correctly anticipate first pitch fastballs, sliders and screwballs, they batted .289, .242 and .276, respectively. Therefore, even when right-handed spray hitters do not anticipate first pitches, they achieve unacceptably high batting averages. Consequently, I need additional pitches that would be effective against right-handed spray hitters.

When, after first pitch fastballs, right-handed spray hitters correctly anticipated second pitch fastballs, sliders and screwballs, they batted .345, .286 and .222*, respectively. Therefore, after first pitch fastballs, I should throw second pitch screwballs.

When, after first pitch sliders, right-handed spray hitters correctly anticipated second pitch fastballs, sliders and screwballs, they batted .333*, .167* and .429*, respectively. Therefore, after first pitch sliders, I should throw second pitch sliders.
When, after first pitch screwballs, right-handed spray hitters correctly anticipated second pitch fastballs, sliders and screwballs, they batted .400, .375 and .200, respectively. Therefore, after first pitch screwballs, I should throw second pitch screwballs.

1st/2nd Pitches .413 .107 .080 .314 .286 .071 .259 .308 .234

When, after first pitch fastballs, right-handed spray hitters did not correctly anticipate second pitch fastballs, sliders and screwballs, they batted .413, .107 and .080, respectively. Therefore, after first pitch fastballs, I should throw second pitch screwballs. The two pitch at bat results concur. To confirm, I need to examine the (FB:Sc) first and second pitch selections in the three pitch sequences.

When, after first pitch sliders, right-handed spray hitters did not correctly anticipate second pitch fastballs, sliders and screwballs, they batted .314, .286 and .071, respectively. Therefore, after first pitch sliders, I should throw second pitch screwballs. However, the two pitch at bat results indicate that, after first pitch sliders, I should throw second pitch sliders (.167*). To resolve this confusion, I need to examine the (SL:Sc) and (SL:SL) first and second pitch selections in the three pitch sequences.

When, after first pitch screwballs, right-handed spray hitters did not correctly anticipate second pitch fastballs, sliders and screwballs, they batted .259, .308 and .234, respectively. Therefore, after first pitch screwballs, I should throw second pitch screwballs. The two pitch at bat results concur. To confirm, I need to examine the (Sc:Sc) first and second pitches in the three pitch sequences.

When, after first pitch fastballs, right-handed pull hitters do not correctly anticipate second pitch fastballs, sliders and screwballs, they batted .133, .143 and .083, respectively. Therefore, after first pitch fastballs, I should throw second pitch screwballs. Also, after first pitch fastballs, second pitch fastballs and sliders produced great results. To determine the best second pitch selection after first pitch fastballs, I need to examine the three pitch sequences.

When, after first pitch sliders, right-handed pull hitters do not correctly anticipate second pitch fastballs, sliders and screwballs, they batted .118, .100 and .000*, respectively. Therefore, after first pitch sliders, I should throw second pitch screwballs. Also, after first pitch sliders, second pitch sliders and fastballs produced great results. To determine the best second pitch selection after first pitch sliders, I need to examine the three pitch sequences.

When, after first pitch screwballs, right-handed pull hitters did not correctly anticipate second pitch fastballs, sliders and screwballs, they batted .111, .348 and .135, respectively. Therefore, after first pitch screwballs, I should throw second pitch fastballs. Also, after first pitch screwballs, second pitch screwballs produced geat results. To determine the better second pitch selection after first pitch screwballs, I need to examine the three pitch sequences.
