The California State University, Sacramento baseball program started in 1947 and Fred Besana was their first player to make it to the Major League level.

Sacramento State advanced to the Division II College World Series in 1986 & 1988. The 1986 Hornets defeated Cal State Dominguez Hills in the West Regional before losing and the 1988 Hornets defeated Cal Poly Pomona in the West Regional before losing to Florida Southern.
