The Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology baseball program started in 1874 and Ray Demmitt was their first player to make it to the Major League level.
The Fightin' Engineers were once part of Rose Polytechnic Institute which changed its name to the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in 1971. Both Backman and Nehf played when the school was called Rose Polytechnic Institute and both are enshrined in the school's athletic hall of fame.
