Swarthmore College Baseball Players Who Made it to the Major Leagues

Baseball Almanac is pleased to present a comprehensive chart of every Swarthmore College alumnus who played baseball at Swarthmore College AND made it to the Major League level.

"When he (Dick Hall) failed to hit well, he switched to pitching. Hall struggled with his new craft in the minors and missed the 1958 season with hepatitis, before emerging to lead the Pacific Coast League in wins, winning percentage, and ERA in 1959. After marginal success as a ML starter, he became one of the top relievers of the 1960s, exhibiting exceptional control despite an awkward-looking herky-jerky motion." - Morris A. Swarthmore College M.L.B. Player Alumnus

The Swarthmore College baseball program started in 1911 and Twink Twining was their first player to make it to the Major League level. Prior to Twining, Morrie Rath attended Swarthmore College and made it to the major leagues in 1909, but did not play for the Garnet Tide.

Swarthmore College is one of the few Division III schools with a major leaguer player in its ranks/alumnus, nevertheless six of them! Must be the fight in their fight song:

Hip, Hip, Hip, for Old Swarthmore

Cornell may have her Royal Red,
Old Yale may have her Blue;
The Crimson of old Harvard,
Is very noted too;
The Red and Black of Haverford,
Has rooters by the score;
But here's to the dear old Garnet,
And the sons of old Swarthmore.

Then Hip, Hip, Hip, for old Swarthmore,
Our Alma Mater dear;
Each staunch foe will quickly yield
As her sons so strong draw near.
Then let us rise in loyalty
And cheer in Fame's bright Hall
With a hip, hip, hip, hurray, hurray,
For the college best of all.

Though dark defeat may haunt our team,
With vict'ry far away;
Though Fate may work against us,
And make the day seem gray;
Though the standard of our enemies,
May conquer old Swarthmore;
'Tis then we will rise and praise thee,
As we did in days of yore.

Did you know that there are six former Swarthmore College players who made it to "the show"? Send corrections or updates to Baseball Almanac.
