The Western Carolina University baseball program started in 1951 and Wayne Tolleson was their first player to make it to the Major League level.

Three other former Major League players attended Western Carolina, but did not play for their team. They were Ron Blackburn, who attended when the school was known as the Western Carolina Teachers College and made his debut in 1958, Van Kelly, who made his debut in 1969, and Andy Tomberlain, who made his debut in 1993.
