Career Leaders for Intentional Bases on Balls

An intentional base-on-balls is an officially recognized statistic (since 1955) that counts the number of times a batter reaches first base after accepting four intentionally wide pitches outside the strike zone. Baseball Almanac is pleased to present the top one-hundred (100) all-time career leaders in Major League intentional bases on balls. Note: A bold faced entry denotes that the player was active during the previous Major League season.

"This is the only place where they keep track of intentional walks. That's obviously because of Barry (Bonds : 1st Overall Career Intentional Bases on Balls Leader). He puts a whole new dimension on the game. There haven't been many situations as an eight-hole hitter where there are two outs and men in scoring position. That's what leads to intentional walks." - San Francisco Giants Catcher Mike Matheny in the San Francisco Chronicle (Henry Schulman, 04/25/2005)

Current Through 2009 Season

Babe Ruth walked one-hundred seventy (170) times during a single season setting the American League single season record. In 2004 Barry Bonds shattered that record and had a major league record one-hundred twenty (120) intentional bases on balls — more IBB than most players will have during their entire career.

By comparison, the American League record for intentional bases on balls during a season is thirty-three (33) which was set by Ted Williams in 1957 then tied by John Olerud in 1993.

Did you know that on May 22, 1990, Andre Dawson of the Chicago Cubs became the first and only major league player to be walked intentionally five times during the same game?
