Single Season Leaders for Strikeouts in the National League

Each of the players holds a dubious mark in baseball history and each of them could easily be a pitchers great moment and two innings later be a pitchers call to the bullpen. These men on this chart each whiffed out more than their fellow players more often in a single season than any other players in the history of the game.

Baseball Almanac is pleased to present the top one-hundred (100) all-time single season leaders in National League strikeouts. Note: A bold faced entry denotes that the player was active during the previous Major League season.

"Don't talk to baseball scouts about football. They'll moan about all the sure-shot phenoms they’ve lost to the gridiron. Ask them instead about Adam Dunn, a towering talent with 'aw shucks' charm who’s almost too good to be true. He quit college football after his freshman year and became a big-league All-Star by age 21. Cincy fans think their 'Dunn deal' is the real deal. No one—including Adam—is likely to disagree." - JockBio.com (Adam Dunn Biography)

Did you know that the National League rookie with the most strikeouts in a single season is Juan Samuel who had one-hundred sixty-eight (168) whiffs with Philadelphia in one-hundred sixty (160) games played during the 1984 season?

The code to write the single season strikeouts league splits was developed in 2005, launched during 2006 and made possible by your support — please continue helping us create these kinds of pages by supporting our site.

The American League single season record for strikeouts was set in 1987 by Rob Deer of the Milwaukee Brewers. The National League single season record for strikeouts is on this page. Is either the Career Leader for Strikeouts?
