On August 14, 1881, the Chicago Tribune published their first batting averages in the newspaper and put Troy Trojans' star Dan Brouthers at the top of the list. By seasons end, Brouthers (.319) finished seventh and Cap Anson (.399) won the batting title.

What happened to the franchise? On December 6, 1882, the National League replaced the franchise with the New York Gothams.
