This particular Washington franchise was admitted to the National League on January 16, 1886, and was often called the Washington Statesman.

On October 1, 1888, Washington catcher and future hall of fame manager Connie Mack lose the lead to Indianapolis in the eighth inning. Mack began to complain about pain in his finger and the injury lasted until nightfall causing the score to revert back to the last complete inning which gave Washington the victory.
