"In 1952 I had a run-in with Jackie Robinson after a play at home plate in Ebbets. The picture in the paper the next day showed Robinson sliding on the first base side of the plate, and he'd never touched home. I was covering home, and I had the plate straddled. To touch home, he had to hit me, and he never touched me. Larry Goetz was the umpire, and he called Robinson safe. I went berserk and got thrown out. I went to the dugout, and I was still giving it to Goetz. I looked over in the Dodger dugout, and Robinson was roaring. So I challenged him, and he signaled 'Let's go meet in the tunnel.' We didn't fight but the next spring I was a little bit leery walking into the Dodger clubhouse at Vero Beach. Jackie Robinson was the first guy to greet me in the clubhouse. He held out his hand and said, 'We've been fighting each other. Let's fight them together.' That showed me what kind of guy Jackie Robinson was." - Russ Meyer in Baseball Digest (Thomas Lavin, "Russ Meyer: He Helped Make 'Boys of Summer' Famous", May 1991)
