He hit .325 and stole 26 bases as a sophomore and in 1986 earned All-America honors after batting .392 and driving in 73 rbi as a junior. Luis Alicea Stats by Baseball Almanac |
On September 15, 1881, Davy Force of Buffalo became the first second baseman in Major League history to turn two unassisted double plays during a game. Claude Ritchey of Louisville tied the record on July 9, 1899, but the American League had to wait until August 10, 1978, when Mike Edwards of Oakland turned two - 19 years later the mark for two unassisted double plays during a game by a second-bagger was tied by Luis Alicea of Anaheim on August 8, 1997.
Luis Alicea Double Play |1994 Upper DeckBaseball Almanac Research Library
When Luis Alicea made his big debut on April 23, 1988, he went 1-for-4 with a triple, a walk and a run scored. Not too many players in history debut with a triple, but this speedy journeyman did and went on to finish his career in the top five in triples three times (1992, 1997, 2000).
Luis Alicea, the journeyman infielder, after he hung up his cleats, was also a journeyman coach. Alicea was the skipper of the Lowell Spinners in 2004 and 2005, and the skipper of the Greenville Drive in 2006. Later that same year, the Boston Red Sox named him as their first base coach, taking over for Bill Haselman. Alicea served in this position during the 2007 and 2008 seasons, but Red Sox manager Terry Francona did not bring him back in 2009. Alicea was then hired by the New York Mets to be their first base coach for the 2009 season. The Mets' finished 70–92 that year, released Alicea, and he hasn't been coaching since (yet).
