Joaquín Andújar was a Major League Baseball player who pitched for the Houston Astros (1976-1981), St. Louis Cardinals (1981-1985), Oakland Athletics (1986-1987), and Houston Astros (1988). Andujar was originally signed by the Cincinnati Reds in 1969, when he was only sixteen years old!

Joaquin Andujar had a 13-year big league career, faced more than 9,000 hitters, and never allowed a grand slam to an opposing batter. Even more impressive is that Andujar hit one grand slam as a Major League player: On May 15, 1984, while pitching (hitting) for the St. Louis Cardinals, Andujar stepped to the plate with the bases loaded in the bottom of the eighth inning and hit a grand slam off relief pitcher Jeff Dedmon of the Atlanta Braves. Andujar pitched a complete game victory that day, and it was the last home run of his career.
The first home run Joaquin Andujar hit, on August 14, 1979, was in the bottom of the second inning, in the Astrodome, off Bill Lee. It was an inside the park home run, two-runs scored, the Astros won 2-1 (all runs came courtesy of the homer), and Andujar pitched a complete game victory that day as well.

Did you know that Joaquin Andujar was the last pitcher from the St. Louis Cardinals to put together a back-to-back pair of a twenty-win seasons? In 1984, Andujar went 20-14, and in 1985, that "One Tough Dominican" went 21-12. Before Andujar, it was hall of famer Bob Gibson who won twenty (or more) in three consecutive seasons (1968-1970) as well as two consecutive seasons (1965-1966).
Did you know that when the "One Tough Dominican" won a Gold Glove Award in 1984, he was the first Dominican Republic-born pitcher to receive the prestigious fielding honor?
What do Gerry Staley (1947-1961) and Joaquin Andujar have in common? They are the only two St. Louis Cardinals' pitchers to lead the National League in hit batsmen in back-to-back seasons. Gerry Staley led the senior circuit in 1952, and 1953, Andujar matched him in 1984, and 1985.
