Harold Douglas Baines was a Major League Baseball player with the Chicago White Sox (1980-1989, 1996-1997, 2000-2001), Texas Rangers (1989-1990), Oakland Athletics (1990-1992), Baltimore Orioles (1993-1995, 1997-1999, 2000), and Cleveland Indians (1999). Did you know that when Harold Baines notched his 1,000th career RBI (Top 1,000) his father was in attendance? Did you also know that Baines holds the Major League record for longest span of seasons between 100 RBIs, with fourteen seasons between his 113 RBIs for Chicago in 1985, and his 103 RBIs for Baltimore / Cleveland in 1999?

Harold Baines graduated in 1977 from St. Michaels High School where he batted .532 and was named a High School All-American his senior year. One month later, the Chicago White Sox made Baines the first selection overall in the 1977 Draft. His average wasn't the only reason why they took that chance, the owner of the White Sox at the time, Bill Veeck, had actually spotted Baines playing Little League ball at the age of 12 and remembered him! It was not too bad a choice:
Harold Baines was a solid contact hitter and finished his twenty-two-year Major League career only one-hundred thirty-four hits shy of the 3,000 Hits Club.
Harold Baines was durable and ranked seventh in American League history in games played (2,830) upon his retirement.
Harold Baines had power and finished-up tied for seventh in American League history in grand slams (13), fourth in 3-home run games (3),and tied for seventh in Major League history in walk-off home runs (10). Baines held the White Sox team record for career home runs from 1987 until Carlton Fisk passed him in 1990.
Harold Baines enjoyed postseason play, hitting .324 in 31 career postseason games, topping the .350 mark in five separate Series.
Harold Baines spent all or parts of 14 seasons with Chicago and was the first White Sox player to have his number retired (in 1989) by the team while he was still active.
Harold Baines was an excellent designated hitter (DH) playing 1,652 games at the position, a Major League record, and he held the mark for career home runs as a DH (236) until Edgar Martinez passed him in 2004. Baines also led the Major Leagues in hits as a DH (1,688) until the mark was surpassed by David Ortiz on July 10th, 2013.
Harold Baines was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame on December 9, 2018, by the Today's Game Era Committee, along with ace closer Lee Smith.

On July 20, 2008, the Chicago White Sox unveiled a bronze statue (image below) of Harold Baines at U.S. Cellular Field prior to their game against the Kansas City Royals; it is the seventh statue featured on the park's outfield concourse. In August 2009, the Baltimore Orioles announced that Baines would be inducted into the Orioles Hall of Fame (here is why):
Former Baltimore Orioles designated hitter HAROLD BAINES has been elected to the Orioles Hall of Fame. Baines spent all or parts of seven seasons in three separate stints with Baltimore from 1993-2000, batting .301 (638-2121) with 107 home runs and 378 RBI in 666 games for the Orioles. The six-time All-Star ranks among the Orioles' all-time leaders in slugging percentage (4th, .502), batting average (5th), home runs (17th) and RBI (24th).
Baines spent 22 seasons in the major leagues from 1980-2001 and at the time of his retirement was baseball's all-time leader in games played, hits, home runs and RBI as a designated hitter. The left-handed hitter compiled a .289 career batting average (2866-9908) with 384 home runs and 1,628 RBI in 2,830 career games with the Chicago White Sox (1980-89, 1996-97, 2000-01), Texas Rangers (1989-90), Oakland Athletics (1990-92), Cleveland Indians (1999) and Orioles (1993-95, 1997-99, 2000).
Baines batted .291 or higher in six of his seven seasons in an Orioles uniform and hit at least .300 three times with the Birds. He hit .300 or better eight years overall in his career, he had at least 100 RBI three times, and he reached double figures in home runs for 21 straight seasons from 1980-2000! Baines was the first player in Major League history to make at least 1,000 appearances as a designated hitter and 1,000 or more at another position (1,079 in the outfield).
In 1999, Baines posted a .533 combined slugging percentage for Baltimore and Cleveland, the highest ever by a player over age 40. He also represented the Orioles on the American League All-Star team and had 103 RBI that year, becoming only the 2nd player in baseball history to top 100 RBI at age 40 or older. He is one of three players (also Elrod Hendricks and Dick Williams) to have three separate stints with Baltimore.
