Scott Baker Stats by Baseball Almanac |
On June 15, 2008, Scott Baker became the first Minnesota Twins pitcher to strike out four batters in one inning when he struck out Ryan Braun, Prince Fielder, Russell Branyan, and Mike Cameron in the third inning. However, Baker was not the first to do so in the Minnesota Twins franchise history as Walter Johnson once struck out four batters in the fifth inning for the Washington Senators on April 15, 1911 against the Boston Red Sox.
Did you know that Scott Baker was the Minnesota Twins starting pitching on October 6, 2009, the fifth American League tiebreaker game in Major League history? Baker started, scattered six hits across six innings, struck out two batters, and earned a no decision, but his Twins defeated the Detroit Tigers 6-5 advancing to the Division Series.
What is a tiebreaker? A tiebreaker is required in Major League Baseball when two or more teams are tied at the end of the regular season for any type of playoff position. Both the American (AL) and National Leagues (NL) currently use a one-game playoff format for tie-breakers, although the NL used a best-of-three series prior to 1969, when the leagues were split into divisions.
Scott Baker, in 2009, became the twenty-second Twins twirler to finish a full season with a perfect fielding percentage (1.000). Baker joined the following Twins pitchers: Nick Blackburn (2008), Johan Santana (2007), Carlos Silva (2007, 2006, 2005), Brad Radke (2006, 1999, 1997, 1996, 1995), Kyle Lohse (2005, 2004, 2002), Eric Milton (2001, 1998), LaTroy Hawkins (1998), Bob Tewksbury (1997), Jim Deshaies (1993), Kevin Tapani (1993), John Smiley (1992), Jack Morris (1991), Allan Anderson (1990), Roy Smith (1989), Bert Blyleven (1986), Brad Havens (1982), Fernando Arroyo (1981), Pete Redfern (1981), Vic Albury (1974), Dave Boswell (1967) and Dick Stigman (1963).
