"I think the mental part of the game is the biggest difference in my game. I'm not as talented as some of these guys so I have to make up for what I lack in ability by using my head." - Dave Bergman in The Oneonta Daily Star (Marty Brodsky, 08/12/1991, 'Bergman Just Doing His Job for Tigers', Page 12)

Dave Bergman Stats by Baseball Almanac |
Dave Bergman was drafted by the Chicago Cubs (his favorite team) in the 12th Round of the 1971 Draft directly out of Maine South High School, but chose to play baseball at Illinois State University where he was voted the Most Valuable Player in 1973 and 1974. The Sporting News also named him as the All-American outfielder that same year, the New York Yankees drafted him in the 1974 Draft, Bergie signed, went on to play professional baseball for nearly two decades, won a World Series ring with the 1984 Detroit Tigers, and had a legendary at-bat that is mentioned by every media outlet whenever they discuss this veteran player:
On June 4, 1984, Dave Bergman came to bat in the tenth inning, two men on base, and two outs in a game against the second-place Toronto Blue Jays, who at that time trailed the Detroit Tigers by five games. Bergman fouled off seven pitches, and on a 3-2 count, hit the thirteenth pitch of the at-bat into the upper deck at Tiger Stadium for a walk-off, three-run home run.
Future Hall of Fame Manager, Sparky Anderson, wrote in Bless You Boys: Diary of the Detroit Tigers' 1984 Season (McGraw-Hill, 09/01/1984, Page 34), "Tonight I saw the greatest at bat in my life...Bergie fouled off seven pitches and then picked one practically off the ground and drilled it into the upper deck in right. What a battle! Bergie was up there a full seven minutes."
Did you know that Dave Bergman won a batting championship AND a league Most Valuable Player Award during his first two seasons playing professional baseball in the Minor Leagues? In 1974, Bergman hit .348 with the 1974 Oneonta Yankees winning the New York-Pennsylvania League Most Valuable Player Award. Then, in 1975, Bergman hit .311 with the 1975 West Haven Yankees winning the Easter League Most Valuable Player Award. Called up to the show that same year, he went hitless in his first seventeen at-bats, striking out four times.
The hidden ball trick was successfully pulled twice by Dave Bergman (video of him getting Alan Wiggins on June 17, 1986), who described how he did it to CBS Sports (Link), "I observed and figured out as time went on that if the runner tried to time you, being left-handed, their vision was kind of blocked a bit by the glove if you just kind of opened it up and put the ball right in the glove. On August 5, 1989, Bergie caught Ozzie Guillen (video below) with the hidden ball trick:
And shared this memory to CBS Sports (Link) as well, "He was dazed for a moment, and by the time he came to he wanted to fight, but he realized the guys had left the field and his team was coming onto the field, so there was nothing he could do except go to shortstop."
