"I had good luck with a lot of pitchers. I hated to sit around the hotel lobby. I'd go to the park early and watch the pitchers loosen up and do their work for the day. Most everybody pitched in between their starts. I saw guys doing little things." - Ray Berres in The Journal Times (Pete Jackel, 10/13/2005, Reluctant legend) |

Did you know that Babe Ruth played a memorable part in Ray Berres career? He shared the story to columnist Pete Jackel in The Journal Times on October 13, 2005: It was during Berres' time with Oklahoma City in the early 1930s when he came into contact with Ruth while the New York Yankees were barnstorming across the country, a common practice in those days. "Babe came up with the bases loaded and two outs and the count went to 3-2, which meant that everybody was on the move,'' Berres said. "He hit the damnedest, highest pop fly that I had ever seen up to that time and the wind was spinning the ball. I started backpedaling all the way to the mound and fell on my butt and the ball bounced on the rubber and I happened to look up and I said, 'Good God, that's almost as high as the one he hit!' "I felt terrible. Everyone scored and the fans booed something awful. When the inning was over, I was depressed, of course, and was walking slowly to the dugout. I thought I was going to get bawled out and, all of a sudden, I felt an arm go around my shoulders and it was the Babe. He said, `Kid, don't let that bother you. That has happened to a lot of big-league catchers.' "Later on, I happened to be catching in Yankee Stadium and he had a habit of walking up to the plate and tapping it. And as he did, he saw me down there and said, 'Hey, kid! I'm glad to see you make it!' That was my introduction to Ruth."
