Baseball Almanac Top Quote

"They still have a picture of that collision up in Fenway Park. The Babe went flying into the air. According to the picture it looks as though he was standing on his head. I held the ball but I was much too busy to tag him. He came crashing down at the plate, so that he could not have known what he was doing. But there was so much baseball instinct in him that he landed with his hand six inches from the plate. He reached over and touched it. In spite of all I'd done to him, he still scored the run." - Charlie Berry (at a 1964 BBWAA dinner)

Remembering Charlie Berry

Charlie Berry was a professional athlete from Phillipsburg, NJ. He played, coached and officiated in the MLB and the NFL for a period of 5 decades. During his reign as a legendary stalwart in 2 major league professional sports, he always resided on Hagerty Avenue in the Hillcrest section of Phillipsburg, NJ from 1902-1970. He served our towns people first and foremost, especially the youth athletic teams, schools, and community celebrations for his lifetime.

Charlie earned a great legacy in sports during the rise in America's favorite games. He was the team captain for every team he played on. He played in the MLB and NFL in the same years, in the same decades. Hundreds of national news articles from the first half of the 20th century personified him as: "A man for all seasons; A man for all reasons", The Dean of American League Umpires (15 yrs.) and NFL Head Lines Judge (24 yrs.); his leadership qualities, athleticism, and professionalism on the field can never be equaled or challenged.

Charlie was a Walter Camp All-American from Lafayette College, while the Leopards won a national championship. He is in the College Football Hall of Fame and the National Football Foundation Hall of Fame. He played NFL football with the Pottsville Maroons. Charlie Berry was instrumental in the 1925 NFL Championship Game win against the Chicago Cardinals. Berry also scored the winning points to defeat Knute Rockne's "Four Horsemen of Notre Dame". Charlie was "All-Pro NFL" for the Pottsville Maroons in 1925 and 1926. In 1925, he scored the most NFL points for that season.

Before Charlie became an NFL official in the 1940's, he coached football at Grove City College in PA. His W-L record was 33-6-4. After being recruited by Connie Mack in '25, he became a MLB catcher for 15 years with the Athletics, Red Sox and White Sox. He also coached with Mack in the late (30's). Then he turned to being an AL Umpire and in the same years, an NFL Head Line Judge, in those respective major league duties.

He barnstormed and played exhibition games, marketing for the Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, with the other MLB greats e.g. Connie Mack, Mountain Landis, Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb, and Lou Gehrig to name a few. He always represented the town of Phillipsburg, his college, his sporting teams, and our country in the rise of American Favorite Pastimes. Charlie's grave and final resting place is in the Belvidere Cemetery of Warren County, NJ.
