Did you know that Bonser's mother gave him the nickname "Boof" when he was a baby? Boof Bonser himself did not know the reason why his mother used the nickname. In 2001, Bonser legally changed his first name to Boof. Let's take a closer look:
Boof? Twins Know What It Means
"He’s a bulldog," Manager Ron Gardenhire said, "if a guy named Boof can be a bulldog."
He was born John Paul Bonser, but he said his mother gave him the nickname Boof when he was a baby. Bonser legally changed his name to Boof in 2001, the year after the San Francisco Giants made him a first-round pick, and two years before the Twins acquired him in the deal that also brought (Francisco) Liriano and closer Joe Nathan for catcher A.J. Pierzynski.
So what does the name mean? Bonser said he never asked and does not care to find out, even after years of questions from reporters, teammates, acquaintances and the occasional restaurant hostess.
"I don’t really want to know why, to be honest with you," said Bonser, 24. "I guess I had no reason to go up and ask her. I just left it at that."
