Baseball Almanac Top Quote

"Ray Boone essentially had three careers, playing shortstop for five years with the Cleveland Indians, severing primarily as a third baseman for the Detroit Tigers for four years, and then finishing off his career as a first baseman. Boone was batting .355 as a third baseman for Oklahoma City in the Texas League when he was called up to fill in for Cleveland shortstop manager Lou Boudreau when Boudreau was injured. Boone was so good that Boudreau moved himself to third upon returning to the lineup, and Boone didn't return to his natural position for several years." - Silverman, Matthew. Author. Did you know that Ray Boone led the American League in runs batted in (RBI) in 1955, driving in one-hundred sixteen runs and finishing the year tied with Jackie Jensen (Top 25)? Boone joined an elite set of former Detroit Tigers who also led the junior circuit: Hank Greenberg1946, 1940, 1935), Rudy York (1943), Harry Heilmann (1925) Bobby Veach (1918, 1917, 1915), Sam Crawford (1915, 1910) and Ty Cobb (1911, 1909, 1908, 1907).

Two years earlier, Ray Boone had 114 RBI for the season, 21 RBI with the Indians and 93 RBI with the Tigers. Did you know that before Ray, only two players in baseball history had a higher single season RBI total split amongst two teams? They were Goose Goslin in 1930 (38 RBI with the Senators and 100 RBI with the Browns) and Gus Zernial in 1951 (4 RBI with the White Sox and 125 RBI with the Athletics).

Ray Boone also hit two grand slams with the Indians and two grand slams with the Tigers in 1953, tying the American League record for grand slams in a season (since broken), set previously by Babe Ruth (1919), Lou Gehrig (1934), Rudy York (1938), Tommy Henrich (1948) and Al Rosen (1951).

Did you know that Ray Boone was the second player from Herbert Hoover High School (San Diego, California) to make it to the show, beating Jack Harshman to the field by thirteen days, but well after his boyhood idol, Ted Williams? Since that trio, Herbert Hoover has continued steadily producing Major League players; Gene Leek (1959-1962), Larry Elliott (1962-1966), Dave Morehead (1963-1970), Jerry DaVanon (1969-1977), Ty Waller (1980-1987), Mike Davis (1980-1989), Eddie Williams (1986-1998) and Mark Davis (1991-1991).

The only Grandfathers, Fathers and Sons set in baseball history to have each generation appear in a World Series game, is the Boone Family! Ray Boone played in the 1948 World Series (Indians 4 vs Braves 2), Bob Boone played in the 1980 World Series (Phillies 4 vs Royals 2), Bret Boone played played in the 1999 World Series (Braves 0 vs Yankees 4), and Aaron Boone played in the 2003 World Series (Yankees 2 vs Marlins 4).
