Baseball Almanac Top Quote

"General Manager Phil Seghi of the Cleveland Indians ripped up pitcher Dick Bosman's contract Saturday and made him richer by about $1,500 because of his no-hit performance against the Oakland A's Friday night. It's illegal to give bonuses, so it was necessary to put the higher figure into a new contract. 'He came through on the new contract,' Bosman said. 'And he thanked me for staying in shape while I wasn't a member of the club's starting rotation.'" - AP Wire (The Sunday Gazette-Mail. Charleston, West Virginia. "Bosman About $1,500 Richer". Dick Bosman had been the bridesmaid - firing 3-hitters on September 25, 1969, October 1, 1972, April 12, 1973, a 2-hitter on September 10, 1969, and 1-hitters on May 2, 1969 and August 13, 1970 - but not the bride, until he faced off versus the A's in Cleveland Stadium in 1974. However, some might say he was still a bridesmaid, his error cost him a perfect game making him the only pitcher in Major League history to miss a perfect game due to his own fielding error.

Dick Bosman No Hitter, July 19, 1974.

The previous year, Dick Bosman's record was 3-13. He had then started the 1974 season in the bullpen. But on Friday July 19 before 24,302 at Cleveland Stadium; he came within one bad play of pitching a perfect game for the AL East's third place Cleveland Indians against the Oakland A's, leaders of the American League's West Division. His mound opponent was Dave Hamilton.

The Indians scored all their runs early. They put two on the board in the third on a single by Tommy McCraw and a home run by Joe Lis, and added two more in the fourth. John Ellis singled and scored on a double by Buddy Bell. Bell went to third on the throw to the plate, and scored on a ground out by McCraw.

Bosman, who took a 1-0 record into the clash, had nobody to blame but himself for missing the perfect game by one batter. After retiring the first 11 batters he faced, Bosman got Sal Bando to hit a checked-swing high-bouncer to the right side of the mound. Bosman called off third baseman Bell, gloved the ball and threw to first. Unfortunately, the throw sailed away from and out of the reach of first baseman McCraw. Bando, who would have been out, not only reached first on the error, he also made it to second.

He never got any further. Bosman retired every other A's batter he faced, concluding the game by setting down 16 batters in a row.

Bosman started by getting Bill North and Bando on ground outs with a strike out of Bert Campaneris in between. He continued to mow down the A's until Bando reached base with two outs in the fourth. Bando was stranded when Reggie Jackson struck out.

The Indians made several fine defensive plays behind Bosman. In the third inning, shortstop Frank Duffy made a leaping catch of Larry Haney's two-out liner. Duffy made another fine play in the fifth, roaming far into the hole between short and third to backhand a grounder by Joe Rudi and throw him out at first. The next batter, Claudell Washington, laced a drive to left-center that John Lowenstein caught after a long run.

Bell threw out the speedy Campaneris on an acrobatic play on a slowly hit roller toward short in the seventh inning. Bell raced in front of Duffy, fielded the ball, rolled over, jumped back to his feet, and threw to first to nip the batter.

Two pitches later, Bando hit a sharp bouncer up the middle that Bosman flung out his glove to stop before throwing the runner out at first.

In the eighth, Bosman retired Rudi on a bouncer to Bell and Washington on a grounder to McCraw at first. Charlie Spikes raced to the warning track in right to haul in a long fly bt Pat Bourque for the third out.

Bosman finished strongly in the ninth, Dick Green hit a three-hopper on the first pitch to Bell, who fielded the ball cleanly and made the play to first. Pinch-hitter Jesus Alou, after taking a long time to get into the batter's box, grounded out to Jack Brohamer at second on a 1-1 pitch for the next out.

North was the final batter. He hit a long foul ball to left, the another foul to the screen. Bosman's third pitch was a sinking fastball, and North swung and missed.

Bosman had thrown just 79 pitches of which only 19 were balls. He struck out four. He finished the season with a 7-5 record.
