Baseball Almanac Top Quote

"You had better understand that you are going to make some bad pitches along the way. That's just the way it is. If you make a pitch agressively, you have a much better chance of getting away with it. However, if you make a pitch tentatively or cautiously, that's when you get nailed." - Kevin Brown

James Kevin Brown was a Major League Baseball player who pitched for the Texas Rangers (1986-1994), Baltimore Orioles (1995), Florida Marlins (1996-1997), San Diego Padres (1998), Los Angeles Dodgers (1999-2003), and New York Yankees (2004-2005). When Brownie, his nickname, made his big league debut on September 30, 1986 (5 IP, 4 SO, 1st Career Victory), he became the first Wilkinson High School (Irwinton, Georgia) graduate to reach the majors.

Did you know that Kevin Brown went 12-9 with a 3.35 ERA in 1989, tops in the majors amongst rookies for both wins and earned run average? He finished fifth in the Rookie of the Year award race, but won the Rangers Rookie of the Year, and tied the team record for most wins (12) in a season by a rookie pitcher. Do you know who preceded him? [Answer]

Did you know that when Kevin Brown was sent to the 1992 All-Star Game, he was selected as the starting pitcher, and became the first Rangers twirler to ever start a Midsummer Classic?

Did you know that Kevin Brown led the National League in shutouts (3) and earned run average (1.89) in 1996? Brownie finished second in the Cy Young Award race, but became the first Marlin to win an ERA Championship, the first to lead the senior circuit in shutouts, and his 1.89 ERA is a still-standing record for lowest ERA in a single season in Marlins history.

Did you know that when Kevin Brown mowed down 257 batters with the 1998 Padres, he set a new (still-standing) all-time single season record for strikeouts in San Diego Padres, held previously by Clay Kirby (231 strikeouts with 1971 Padres)?

Did you know that when Kevin Brown recorded forty-one putouts with the 1999 Dodgers, it was the first time in franchise history any pitcher had forty-or-more in a season, and a still-standing Dodger single season record for putouts?

Did you know that only eighteen pitchers in Major League Baseball history have earned a win against all thirty Major League teams? Sportswriter AJ Cassavell once wrote, "Beating one Major League team figures to be difficult enough for a starting pitcher. Beating all 30 of them, however, is nothing short of pitching history." We agree and are pleased to present the I've Beaten Every Major League Team "club" that includes these 18 twirlers: Kevin Brown, A.J. Burnett, Bartolo Colon, Dan Haren, Tim Hudson, Randy Johnson, John Lackey, Al Leiter (who started the "club"), Kyle Lohse, Derek Lowe, Jamie Moyer, Terry Mulholland, Vicente Padilla, Max Scherzer, Curt Schilling, Javier Vazquez, Woody Williams and Barry Zito.

Kevin Brown took the mound in 486 games, started 476 contests, won 211 times, threw 72 complete games, recorded 17 career shutouts, had two one-hitters, and one no-hitter, which was nearly a perfect game:

Kevin Brown No-Hitter (June 10, 1997)

Having been a chemical engineering major at Georgia Tech, Kevin Brown knew he had the right formula when he went up against the San Francisco Giants on Tuesday, June 10 at Candlestick Park. His fastball was the main ingredient, and it was moving especially well.

So well, in fact, that Brown struck out seven and walked none in the first no-hit game he ever pitched at any level. Brown threw 99 pitches of which 85 were fastballs. The only blemish on his game was a hit batter.

The 32-year-old Brown carried a 5-4 record for the second-place Florida Marlins of the NL East into the fray against William Van Landingham and the NL West's first place Giants. A crowd of 10,257 was in the stands.

Brown was nearly perfect. The only Giant to reach base was pinch-hitter Marvin Bernard, who was nicked on the leg on an 0-2 pitch with two outs in the eighth inning following a fly out to left by Barry Bonds and a strikeout by Jeff Kent. Bernard was forced at second on a grounder by Mark Lewis.

The Giants didn't get a ball out of the infield until Darryl Hamilton flied out leading off the fourth. Only two other balls were hit to the outfield.

Brown went 3-2 counts twice, and both times struck out the batters - Kent in the second and Glenallen Hill in the fifth. Brown never struck out more than one batter in any inning.

The closest the Giants came to a hit was in the seventh when J.T. Snow's grounder hit the mound. The ball was slowed down enough that it gave Luis Castilllo time to field it on the grass behind second base, and throw the runner out at first by a step.

In the Giants' first at-bat, Brown got Hamilton on a grounder to first, Jose Vizcaino on strikes and Snow on a ground out to the mound.

Van Landingham matched Brown's no-hitter for the first six innings, but gave up one run in the fifth on a walk to Jeff Conine, a stolen base, wild pitch and a balk.

The Marlins added seven more runs in the seventh inning with Charles Johnson smacking a two-run homer and Edgar Renteria adding a two-run single to highlight the uprising. Moises Alou and Bobby Bonilla also singled in runs with another scoring on an error. A final Marlins run crossed in the ninth when Renteria doubled, went to third on a ground out and scored on Alou's sacrifice fly.

Brown, an excitable hurler known for his emotional outbursts — often directed at himself — retired the Giants in order in the ninth. Pitch-hitter Bill Mueller grounded softly to Conine at first another pinch-hitter, Stan Javier, bounced out to Renteria at shortstop, and Hamilton struck out looking (video below) on a 1-2 pitch to end the game.

At the end of the season, Brown had a 16-8 record.

Kevin Brown threw a legendary sinking fastball that averaged 91 to 96 mph, with a tremendous downward movement, that tailed away from left-handed or right-handed hitters because Brownie could spot it to either side of the plate. Batters generally pounded Kevin's sinking fastball into the ground (or missed it entirely) allowing him to field the ball, throw to first, and record a putout — so effective in fact, that only one pitcher in baseball history had more career putouts, hall of famer Greg Maddux! Those who appear after Brown (#2 all-time) are; #3 Jack Morris, #4 Phil Niekro, #5 Fergie Jenkins, #6 Gaylord Perry, #7 Don Sutton, all Hall of Fame pitchers as well!
