Baseball Almanac Top Quote

"But one thing Lou (Piniella) did not have in '02 that he had had throughout his tenure was right fielder Jay Buhner, the best team leader the franchise ever had. Whereas Ken Griffey Jr. was the face of the franchise from 1989 through 1998, Jay Buhner was the grunge during his fourteen seasons with the Mariners. The oft-injured Buhner retired at the end of the 2001 season, one small step from his ultimate goal — playing and winning a World Series. 'Bone,' as he was known, kept everyone in the clubhouse in line. You didn't mess with Lou or anyone, or you would hear it from Bone. He was big, bald, and powerful. He was also a clubhouse character, one time emerging from a shower in spring training wearing nothing but a smile and a bagel — in a certain area of his body. Jay took gruff from no one. He spoke, and teammates listened." - Street, Jim. Author. Life From The Press Box: Recollections of a Sportswriter. CreateSpace Publishing. 27 December 2012. Page 143.

Jay Campbell Buhner was a Major League Baseball player with the New York Yankees (1987-1988) and Seattle Mariners (1988-2001). When Buhner made his big league debut on September 11, 1987, he became the first Clear Creek High School graduate to play in the majors!

On June 23, 1993, Jay Buhner hit a grand slam in the bottom of the first inning off Kelly Downs. Three innings later, Buhner stroked a double to right field, also courtesy of Downs, and when Kelly was on the mound in the fifth, Buhner singled off him to left field. The A's called Storm Davis in from the bullpen. Needing "only" a triple to complete the cycle, Buhner struck out in the seventh and grounded out in the ninth, but luckily for him, the score was tied 7-7. Up next in the 11th inning, Buhner struck out. Up next in the 14th inning, Buhner hit a lead-off triple off Shawn Hillegas, completing the cycle and later scoring the winning run on a walk-off wild pitch!

The cycle hit by Jay Buhner was the first ever by a Seattle Mariner! The home run Buhner hit during his cycle was a grand slam, only the fourth instance in American League history where a player completed a cycle with a grand slam, joining Nap Lajoie (July 30, 1901), Tony Lazzeri (June 3, 1932) and Jimmie Foxx (August 14, 1933).

In 2004, Jay Buhner was inducted into the Seattle Mariners Hall of Fame, joining Alvin Davis (Class of 1997) and (announcer) Dave Niehaus (Class of 2000). Buhner's Bio:

Former outfielder Jay Buhner was a force on the field, a leader in the clubhouse and a leader in the community. He was inducted into the Mariners Hall of Fame on August 24, 2004. Buhner, who came to the Mariners in a 1988 trade with the New York Yankees, played 14 seasons in a Seattle Mariners uniform. He belted 310 home runs with 965 RBI during his Major League career. From 1996-1998, he became just the 10th player to hit 40 or more home runs in three consecutive seasons. Jay ranks among the Mariners career leaders in games (1440; 3rd), at bats (4,922; 3rd), runs (790; 3rd), hits (1,255; 3rd), doubles (231; 3rd), triples (19; tied for 7th), home runs (307; 2nd), RBI (951; 3rd), total bases (2,445; 3rd), extra-base hits (557; 3rd), slugging percentage (.497, 5th) and walks (788; 2nd).

Off the field, Buhner was the inspiration for the unique "Buhner Buzz Nights" that took place each season from 1994-2001. Thousands of fans lined up hours before the games to have their heads shaved and receive free admission to salute Jay, and on several nights received "Bald is Buhnerful" t-shirts. In 1997, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation presented Jay with the Breath of Life Award for his outstanding commitment to Cystic Fibrosis.

Did you know that Jay Buhner was the first player in baseball history to finish his career with more than three-hundred home runs (310 HR), but less than one-thousand runs batted in (965 RBI)? Since Buhner, Jeromy Burnitz (315 HRs / 981 RBI), Reggie Sanders (305 HRs / 983 RBI), Richie Sexson (306 HRs / 943 RBI), Troy Glaus (320 HRs / 950 RBI), Jose Bautista (344 HRs / 975 RBI), and Curtis Granderson (344 HRs / 977 RBI) have ended their careers in the "Why can't there be more men on base club?"
