Baseball Almanac Top Quote

"Carlton was as focused as any pitcher who ever lived. Nothing distracted him. He devoted his undivided attention to the task at hand. 'Lefty was a craftsman, an artist,' said another Phillies Hall of Famer, Richie Ashburn. 'He was a perfectionist. He painted a ballgame. Stroke, stroke, stroke, and when he got through (pitching a game) it was a masterpiece. There was nothing accidental about it. His games were perfectly orchestrated.'" - Westcott, Rich. Author. Philadelphia's Top Fifty Baseball Players. University of Nebraska Press. 1 May 2013. Page 207.

Steve Carlton was the first pitcher in baseball history to win four Cy Young Awards in a career. The intimidating lefty won a Cy Young in 1972, 1977, 1980 and 1982 - the same four years Lefty led the National League in wins. Join Baseball Almanac as we flip over Carlton's baseball card and take a look at some additional numbers of interest as they relate to one of the most dominating pitchers in Major League history:

27 - Steve Carlton won a career high 27 games in 1972, a remarkable feat in and of itself, but his team - the last place finishing Phillies - had won a total of 59 games for the entire season (giving Lefty 46% of his team's victories that year).

32 - Steve Carlton's #32 jersey was retired on "Steve Carlton Night" by the Philadelphia Phillies on July 29, 1989.

90 - Steve Carlton finished his career with 90 balks, the Major League record for Most Balks in a Career. His 82 National League balks are the most in the senior circuit and his American League counterpart is Charlie Hough, with 32 career balks. [Balks Records]

95.82 - Steve Carlton was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1994, in his first year of eligibility by the Baseball Writers Association of America, who wrote his name onto 95.82% of their ballots. At the time of Lefty's Induction, only Tom Seaver, Ty Cobb, Hank Aaron, and Johnny Bench had their names written on more ballots. [Baseball Hall of Fame BBWAA Voting Percentages]

300 - Steve Carlton beat the St. Louis Cardinals 6-2 on September 23, 1983, joining the 300 Wins Club. Carlton was the fourth lefty with 300 career wins, joining Eddie Plank, Lefty Grove, and Warren Spahn, and the youngest left-handed pitcher to win 300 games (unsurpassed through today). [Top 1,000 Career Wins]

304 - Steve Carlton pitched 304 innings in 1980, the last pitcher in Major League history, from any team to throw 300-or-more innings during a single season. [Year by Year Leaders for Innings Pitched]

3,000 - Steve Carlton struck out Tim Wallach on April 29, 1981, putting his name into the 3,000 Strikeouts Club, the first left-handed pitcher in baseball history with 3,000 career strikeouts. [Top 1,000 Career Strikeouts]

In 1972, Steve Carlton led the National League in wins (27), strikeouts (310) and earned run average (1.97), capturing the Pitching Triple Crown. Carlton was the first Phillies left-handed pitcher to win a Triple Crown and no pitcher - lefty or righty - from Philadelphia has led the league in those three stats since Lefty.
