Baseball Almanac Top Quote

"As (Gary) Carter's game improved, so did the fortunes of the (Montreal) Expos. Led by 'The Kid,' a nickname Carter acquired as a result of his youthful exuberance and ever-present smile, the team steadily improved from 107 losses in 1976 to back-to-back second place finishes in 1979 and 1980." - The National Baseball Hall of Fame (2003) [Gary Carter Quotes]

Gary Carter had a Major League smile. Gary Carter had Major League enthusiasm. Gary Carter was an absolute "gamer" in every sense of the word (Source: Steve Rogers). Gary Carter was a rock-solid, hard hitting, team leader who easily qualifies as one of the single best catchers in the history of Major League baseball. Join Baseball Almanac as we take a look at some additional numbers of interest:

1 - Gary Carter was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame on his sixth ballot, receiving 78.02% of the votes in 2003, and became the first Hall of Fame member whose plaque (below) depicts him as a member of the Montreal Expos.

3 - Gary Carter was an eleven time All-Star and the third player in Midsummer Classic history to win the All-Star Most Valuable Player Award twice. The Kid won after his performance in 1981 & 1984, joining Willie Mays (1963 & 1968) and Steve Garvey (1974 & 1978).

5 - Gary Carter was the first National League catcher to win a Silver Slugger Award more than once, garnishing back to back hardware in 1981 & 1982. The Kid would go on to become the first to also win it three times, four times, and five times — a feat not matched until Mike Piazza won his fifth in 1997.

8 - Gary Carter wore #8 and in 2003, the Montreal Expos retired it in his honor. In Still a Kid at Heart: My Life in Baseball and Beyond (Gary Carter, Triumph Publishing, 04/01/2008, Page 22), Carter shared, "I was born on April 8. I got married on February 8. We moved into our first home in California on November 8. And look at all the great players who wore No. 8: Carl Yastrzemski. Willie Stargell. Yogi Berra. Bill Dickey. Joe Morgan. Cal Ripken, Jr. All Hall of Famers. So when I was assigned No. 8, I remembered all those things and figured it would be a lucky number for me, and it was."

1972 - Gary Carter was selected in the third round of the 1972 Draft directly out of high school, fifty-third overall, but could have easily taken his football scholarship to UCLA (or any of the other 75+ schools that offered him a scholarship).

1980 - Gary Carter won his first Gold Glove Award in 1980, becoming the first Montreal backstop to receive the honor. The Kid won three-in-a-row (1980-1982), and Montreal relocated following the 2004 season, ultimately making Carter the only Expos catcher to win a Golden Glove!

1981 - Gary Carter caught all-nine innings of a game on May 10, 1981. Then later that same night, The Kid caught every inning of game two — a nine inning no-hitter! Do you remember who the pitcher was? [Answer]
